It has been a while since I have been here. I have been thinking what is the best way to utilize this space. So I have decided that this would be great to document the book making process here.

I just found out yesterday that I will be creating a book with Northlight Books. This is my first book and am very excited about this project. At the moment I don't know the details of the project, how long will it take, how many projects do I need to step out and when will it be available for purchase. You will be the first to know.

So I hope you enjoy the ride with me.

Staying on top

I am trying to stay on top of this blog thing. I have a tendency to let life take over and then have nothing to say out loud. Maybe when I get tired it takes too much energy to even speak. HHMM Or maybe I don't have anything to say.

Well a lot is going on and I am trying to get ready and be prepared. I need to upload a lot of work to my etsy shop. That means I need to finish it and photo it also. We finally have a sunny day, hope that last.
Off to work I go!!!

When I was young I remember making brownies from scratch. When I was in high school I did not cook much. At the time I was helping my father build a two-story house and my sisters job was to cook. My father use to tease me, he said that I couldn’t boil water. Well one day he decided that my sister and I needed to change jobs. I was worried about my tools and what my sister would do with them.

He set up the ground rules and would grade me from one to ten, ten being the highest. He wanted the meals to taste good, be balanced, everything had to be the correct temperature and had to be on the table at a certain time. I would have this new job for one week.

At the beginning of the week I received very low scores but by the end I made a ten. The next day I went back to my normal carpentry job and boy were my tools a mess. It took me longer than a week to find everything.

Local Cuisines

My life has been a whirlwind of travel that didn’t seem to have a reason. Many times I felt like a leaf blowing in the wind. Yesterday I had an epiphany. I finally saw my travels as research for what I am doing now. I have first hand knowledge of many local cuisines. Whenever I went to a new place I would settle in as a local and then search for what the locals ate. I always wanted to see my new world as a local not a tourist.

My life has now taken me into the world of teaching cooking. I have been a teacher since high school. I taught Korean cooking with my Jung Soon Ahn and now I am teaching at the Way Cool Cooking School.

I think it is funny because about six months ago I decided to create an Art Cookbook….hhhhmmmm.

Recipes and cooking

I am always on the outlook for good food. When I find a good recipe I try it and try it till I fully understand what makes it good. Then I start to improve on it. I am always trying to make the recipes healthier.
I was trained by a famous chef in South Korea; Jung Soon Ahn. She taught me in the old fashion way, by showing. She created the dishes over and over and never the same way twice. I would watch, learn and taste till I understood why she did what she did. At the time I did not realize she was famous in her country and had won many presitigeous awards. It wasn't till we went out to eat that I started to realize her cooking was very good.
The irony of our wonderful relationship is that she only understood a few words of English and I understood only the few words about food that she taught me. But we communicated as if there were no language barrior at all.

Recipe Apron

So I am kicking around some ideas of writing recipes on my aprons. I created one but wasn't pleased with the whole layout. I think the next one needs to be planned a little different before I just jump in.
At the cooking school I have an opportunity to wear all of my different aprons. They are quite the attention getter. It is funny , they feel like the perfect accessory and I feel naked without one on! LOL.
Some of my favorites to wear are the sheer ones with faces and long sheer ties and the ones I create from ultra suede.

wow I can hardly believe that we are half way through January.
I have my aprons in some local stores, gallery and now a cooking school. I am now also working there. I am very busy but it is a lot of fun.

How did it Start

I am often asked how did you think to create this?
So I have had to go back through the rolodex in my mind to find the pivotal moment of this creation.
I don't always remember because:
1. My memory is sliding somewhere
2. I create everyday so I cannot remember every creative idea
3. If I didn't actually try the idea, it would have slipped into that never land where unused ideas go

Well I happened to act out on this idea; an art apron. I wanted to create a apron for an artist to wear that had a drawing of mine on it.

First mistake, create it the way you think it should be created not how it wants to be created and try to create it the "correct" way.

So after making two or three in this fashion, and liking them at that time, I am now a whole lot "wiser".

Fashion Aprons

What are Fashion Aprons?

The Wearable Art Aprons that I create are one of a kind pieces of art that can be worn, washed and then hung on the wall as decoration. These are new, hip and cool fashion statements that are worn as an accessory over jeans and skirts. Yes they still can be worn in the kitchen but why stop there......
Trend scouts and shoppers from the East Coast have recently contacted me to inquire about these.
So who buys these?
I have had mothers buy them for their daughters, daughters buy them for their mothers, women buying them for themselves to wear to their corporate office.

What are these made from?

I break all the rules and combine any fabrics I choose to put together. I use silk, linen, cotton, sheers, gauze, metallics, fringe, ribbons, organza, taffetas, rayons, netting, saris and anything else that works artisticly. After the creation is made I vigoriously wash it with hot water and then ironed on the back side and carefully ironed on the right side. Some of the fiber; like the netting will melt and others will crinkle. Sometimes that is the look I am going for, but for care of your new art I would recommend ironing only on the backside.

Most of all choose a apron that appeals to you and enjoy, remember there are no rules when it comes to the wearing the New Apron.
